Why Mandarin Chinese?
Spoken by more than one billion people worldwide, Mandarin Chinese is one of the most valuable languages you can learn. Whether you're interested in business, technology, healthcare, international relations, or education, Chinese language skills can help you stand out in today's global job market.
At Texas Tech, you'll do more than learn a language, you'll explore a rich culture, gain a global perspective, and develop skills that employers value. With courses ranging from beginning to advanced Mandarin, students can pursue a major or minor in Chinese while studying topics such as Business Chinese, translation, linguistics, cinema, culture, and literature.
Programs Within Mandarin Chinese
Languages and Cultures, B.A.: Chinese Language and Area Studies
The Bachelor of Arts in Languages and Cultures majoring in Chinese Language and Area Studies consists of 33 hours at the 2000-level and above, including CMLL 2305, a minimum of 6 hours of 4000-level Chinese courses. This major also requires 9 hours of communication literacy courses. Students must make a C or better in departmental courses to be eligible for graduation.
Chinese, Undergraduate Minor
The minor in Chinese consists of a minimum of 22 hours of Chinese language courses.
Global Readiness, Undergraduate Certificate
Combine your career interests with the skills you obtain in language classes! The Global Readiness Certificate allows you to connect your career interests with your language studies, whether you are interested in working in Texas, the US, or abroad. In addition to the ability to speak in another language, language courses provide you with many of the skills valued by employers, such as cross-cultural competency and increased analytical ability. Focus on your career and enhance your resume by earning the Global Readiness Certificate.

Translation and Interpretation, Undergraduate Certificate
The CMLL Undergraduate Certificate in Translation and Interpretation provides the foundation for a career in translating and interpreting and the basis to work toward professional certification. There is an increasing need for translation and interpretation services.

Chinese Summer Camps
“Ni Hao, Chinese!” is a summer camp focused on Chinese language and culture, offered to 3rd -8th grade students in Lubbock and the surrounding area by the Chinese language program, Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures at Texas Tech University. The camp offers a range of engaging activities designed to immerse students in the Chinese language and culture. At the end of the camps, students will be able to say Chinese words, phrases, and sentences according to the themes, write frequently used Chinese characters, understand Chinese culture, and gain the confident in learning Chinese language and culture. The camp offers a theme-based curriculum with different themes and topics each week. This allows parents to register their children for any week that fits their schedule or interests.
