Spanish Heritage Course Descriptions

If you have grown up in a house speaking and/or listening to Spanish, we recommend taking the placement exam first so that you are enrolled in a course that is best for you.

Courses Offered

SPUS. Spanish in the United States.    
The focus of this concentration is on improving the oral and written skills in Spanish while learning about the Spanish language and Latinx culture in the United States. This concentration would require SPAN 3305 (Intermediate Grammar: Oral and Written Spanish) or SPAN 3315 (Communication literacies for heritage speakers) and SPAN 4307 (Writing Literacies in Context). It would also require three credits at the 4000-level, choosing from the following: SPAN 4360: Latinx Literature & Culture, SPAN 4361: Spanish for the Southwest, or SPAN 4318: Spanish in the United States.    

SPAN 1508

A first-year course designed for students who grew up listening to Spanish at home and are not confident in speaking, reading, and writing it.

SPAN 2303/2304

A second-year course designed for Hispanic students who speak or have heard Spanish at home, but have had little or no formal education in Spanish.

SPAN 3315

A third-year course designed for different degrees of bilingual students in which oral and written communication skills are developed through the study of language and culture in bilingual contexts. This course includes a virtual linguistic and cultural exchange with Mexican, college students (available only during Fall and Spring semesters).
