Department of English: Statement of Support

The Department of English is steadfast in its support of its students and instructors, as well as their wide-ranging areas of inquiry and their right to be treated with dignity and respect inside and outside the classroom. Our department values varied experiences, perspectives, languages, and goals in the classroom, and we see those differences as strengths that enrich learning for everyone. Through the study of literature, writing, rhetoric, language, and culture, we aim to help students develop strong communication skills, critical thinking, empathy, and confidence in their own engagement.

To support success and belonging, the Department of English is committed to the following:

• Maintaining respectful and inclusive classroom practices that encourage active participation and constructive feedback and dialogue;
• Providing mentorship and accessible faculty support for academic, professional, and creative development;
• Designing courses that introduce students to a broad range of authors, traditions, genres, and perspectives;
• Supporting students at all levels from varied cultures, histories, and perspectives as they navigate university life and professional opportunities;
• Encouraging participation in student organizations, writing communities, internships, research opportunities, and public-facing humanities work;
• Promoting clear communication about academic expectations, campus resources, changing or developing operational procedures and memoranda, and pathways for student support; and
• Creating learning environments where students can engage challenging ideas while being treated with dignity and respect.
