Political Economy Reading Program
Fall 2024 Spring 2024 Fall 2023 Spring 2023
Antitrust — Spring 2024
The theme for the spring 2024 reading program is Antitrust. Participants will explore debates about the relationship between economic and political power and the state's role in limiting economic power via antitrust.
Does capitalism inevitably lead to monopoly? If so, how does this tendency affect the case for free markets? What role can the state play in promoting competition? Participants will receive a set of readings that will provide a foundation for the discussions to address these and other questions of importance to the program theme.
The group will meet weekly throughout the semester for Socratic-style discussions facilitated by Dr. Bryan Cutsinger, FMI Research Assistant Professor and Assistant Professor of Economics at Angelo State University. Meetings will take place in person on the Angelo State University campus during the spring 2024 semester on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 PM to 6:45 PM (location TBD). The program will begin with an Introductory Session on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.
Participants will also attend a mandatory weekend summit which will take place on February 16-17, 2024, on the Texas Tech University campus to be attended by program participants from Angelo State University and Texas Tech University. The summit will feature formal remarks from Michael Munger, Professor of Political Science at Duke University. Participants will engage in interactive group discussion and question and answer sessions on issues related to the program theme.
