In Memoriam of Lane Powell
Texas Tech University Human Development and Family Studies professor, Dr. Lane Powell, has passed away due to pancreatic cancer. Dr. Powell worked in the College of Human Sciences as a professor and administrator from 1999 to 2013.
Dr. Powell earned degrees from Samford University and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary before earning her Ph.D. from Texas Tech with a dissertation entitled "Evaluation of a church-based sexuality program for adolescents."
Dr. Powell was an advisor to the award winning Texas Tech Council on Family Relations, as well as the certification advisor for the Certified Family Life Educator Program. She was a career-advising specialist and received the Meritorious Service to Families Award from the National Council on Family Relations, the leading professional society in the family-studies discipline.
As active members of the Association of Couples for Marriage Enrichment, Dr. Powell and her husband, Bob, were extensive educational contributors in the community before retiring to Birmingham, Alabama in 2014.
Metro Leader Newspaper called Dr. Powell a change-maker for women's leadership, rights, and education. She made a wonderful impact on the College of Human Sciences as well as the Texas Tech community and will be missed dearly.
