Meeting Future Red Raiders: The Human Sciences Impact

Human Sciences Travels to Dallas for Raider Roadshow Event

Human Sciences faculty and staff travel to DFW to meet future Texas Tech students in DFWTexas Tech University deans, professors, staff, and student ambassadors travel across the state of Texas to meet future students for the annual Raider Roadshow. The event offers current high school and community college students, along with their families, the opportunity to discuss academic goals and how Texas Tech degree offerings can align with their goals.

College of Human Sciences (COHS) faculty and staff recently traveled to the Westin Galleria in Dallas for Raider Roadshow to share what makes COHS degrees so unique. The team for Human Sciences included department faculty members and representatives from the Office of Recruitment, Marketing and Communications, Advising, and Student Ambassadors in the college.

Raider Roadshow attendees can meet with current students to gain a student perspective and mingle with staff from Academic Advising and Student Services, all before stepping foot on the Texas Tech campus. The Roadshow has an added element of excitement for alumni, with many who attend to celebrate their university and share their past experiences first-hand.

Assistant Director for Recruitment in the College of Human Sciences, Billy Tiongco, describes the event as a great way for students to experience what Texas Tech has to offer, with the convenience of their hometown location.

"Our offices and student organizations really work well together," Billy said. "We have a great deal of experience in recruitment and everyone involved has a great deal of pride in TTU and the College of Human Sciences. My hope is that students had their questions answered and that they know what their next steps are."

Students interested in pre-professional health careers can explore different areas of study that they may not have previously considered, like the four COHS undergraduate degree options that distinctively align with a career in medicine, nursing, allied health, or other health care specialties. Prospective students can also visit with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center to see where their degree options could lead them after graduation.

"Even though we are from different colleges and departments, we share the common goal of promoting Texas Tech," Billy said. "Seeing students become excited about coming to Texas Tech is my favorite part. There is nothing like making that connection."

Director of Advising and Retention, Ashlee Brown, saw the Raider Roadshow event as an opportunity to better serve both current and future students in the College of Human Sciences.

"My goal for attending the Raider Roadshow was to gain a better understanding of the needs and expectations of our incoming new students and provide specific information regarding our new degree programs," Ashlee said.

Ashlee looks back on the experience hoping that students and parents left the event with a feeling of belonging to the Human Sciences family.

"I want all students to have their questions answered and anxieties relieved," Ashlee said. "I also want the parents to feel comfortable sending their students to our amazing university."

Following the Raider Roadshow was the Dallas Merit Scholarship Reception, held in honor of high-achieving students in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The aim of the reception was to highlight COHS programs further to this select group of students in a more intimate setting.

"Many of the students were interested in a COHS program and they were able to connect with faculty and staff to learn more about their program of interest, as well as scholarship opportunities," Billy explained. "It's awesome to see a student learn more about a specific program and make the connection that it may be the perfect major for them!"
