Human Sciences Students Awarded Scholarships and Fellowships

Scholarships and Fellowships: Supporting Academic Success

Three students in the College of Human Sciences have been awarded the Louise Willson Arnold Scholarship and Fellowship. The Louise Willson Arnold Scholarship and Fellowship is awarded to three outstanding College of Human Sciences students each year. Typically, two $5,000 scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students, and one $10,000 fellowship is awarded to a graduate student. Preference is given to students who have demonstrated leadership and community involvement, and students can keep the award the following year if they maintain a 3.0 GPA.

"When I got the email from the College of Human Sciences that I was a recipient of the Louise Willson Arnold Scholarship, I was shocked at first," undergraduate scholarship recipient Clancy White said. "I had to read the email a couple of times to process it, and then I immediately called my mom."

Clancy is a Nutrition major pursuing a Pre-Professional Health Career (PPHC) track here in the College of Human Sciences and is set to graduate in 2022. Clancy's goal after graduation is to apply for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy.

"It was extremely exciting to receive the news because the Louise Willson Arnold Scholarship gives me more financial help than the scholarship I previously had," Clancy said. "Since my goal is to be a pharmacist, and I will have to go to graduate school, this scholarship helps me out financially by covering some of my tuition. "

Junior Early Childhood major April Homer was pleasantly surprised to also be awarded the scholarship.

"I am deeply honored and extremely grateful for the honor, and I am excited to use this scholarship to continue my education here at Texas Tech," April said.

April plans on graduating in May of 2020 before becoming a teacher.

"My ultimate goal is to become an exceptional elementary school teacher, and the education that I am receiving at Texas Tech is placing me on the best path, "April said. "I want to encourage others to pursue their dreams, support children in any way possible, and shape the future into a place where people generally care for one another, think for themselves, and constantly pursue the truth."

April's brother just graduated from college in May 2018, and her sister started this August, so April said that the Louise Willson Arnold Scholarship is extremely helpful and will make her education more affordable. April is grateful to the College of Human Sciences for providing scholarship opportunities year round.

"The College of Human Sciences is exceptional in every area, but they are beyond phenomenal when it comes to scholarship opportunities," April said. "There are so many scholarships offered to us, and there is a perfect scholarship for each and every person."

The fellowship provided graduate student Derek Holyoak an opportunity to pursue his career goal to become a faculty member at a top tier university.

"As most students know, obtaining an education is not a cheap endeavor," Derek said. "I moved to Lubbock, Texas with my wife and two daughters specifically to attend Texas Tech's Couple, Marriage, and Family Therapy (CMFT) program, so paying for schooling is a difficult task. As such, this fellowship has primarily provided me with an excellent opportunity to pursue my future career goals, but with one less worry."

Derek is currently completing his first year as a Ph.D. student in the CMFT program. Derek said that the Louise Willson Arnold Fellowship has provided him an added measure of motivation to be productive as a researcher and a student, so that he can rise to the expectations of those who are willing to put their faith in him and his future.

"It was an immense honor to even be considered a candidate for the Louise Willson Arnold Fellowship let alone be the recipient," Derek said. "To be completely honest, I was shocked and quite speechless when I received the news that I was going to receive such an amazing fellowship and it is my hope to show forth my gratitude by being a productive researcher and student here at Texas Tech."

Derek has attended several universities during his educational career, but he pointed to the College of Human Sciences as the top standout.

"The College of Human Sciences here at Texas Tech has, by far, offered some of the best scholarships and fellowships when compared to the other institutions I have previously attended."

For many students, scholarships and fellowships are part of the equation for student success.

"I think the College of Human Sciences stands out because there are countless opportunities for scholarships," Clancy said. "They are also very proactive; the College of Human Sciences contacted me about the Louise Willson Arnold Scholarship and gave me all the information I needed to accept it."

The College of Human Sciences strives to give students the opportunity to earn a degree with influence, work with our prominent faculty, and receive a hands-on education in state-of-the-art facilities.
