About the Department of Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is the largest major in the engineering college at Texas Tech University. Current enrollment of 828 students which includes 692 undergraduate students and 136 graduate students. The Department has 39 faculty members from diverse backgrounds who conduct advanced research, advise students, and teach a rigorous curriculum. The ME curriculum comprises courses in design and manufacturing, dynamics and controls, mechanics and materials, and thermofluids. Computational thinking and capstone design projects are also an integral part of the curriculum. 

Perspectives for ME Graduates

The Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering. Our demanding curriculum offers a strong foundation for students to excel in both traditional and high-tech industries, the latter with examples ranging from the thermal management of a powerful smartphone, mechanical design of an electric vehicle, control of a fleet of autonomous vehicles, to propulsion systems for space exploration. The Department has an engaging alumni advisory board that constantly provides feedback in curriculum and research directions, making the Department thrive in this ever-changing world.

The department has been named the winner of the Teaching Academy's Departmental Excellence in Teaching Award. This is presented in recognition of a department that has esprit de corps in its dedication to the education of students.

The Whitacre College of Engineering hosted the Distinguished Engineers Award celebration on May 6, 2022. We are most proud that one of this year's two recipients is an ME graduate and the sole Young Distinguished Engineer Award recipient is also an ME graduate.
