The Museum is an educational, scientific, cultural, and research element of Texas Tech University. It consists of several components: the main Museum building, the Moody Planetarium, the Natural Science Research Laboratory, and the Lubbock Lake Landmark. The Museum is a member of the Blue Star Program which gives free admission to military personnel and veterans.

The Vietnam Center also seeks to provide a forum for all points of view and for all topics relating to Indochina, particularly - but not limited to - the American military involvement there.

Created for the purpose of honoring the sacrifices for our freedom, the center portion of the memorial commemorates South Plains veterans who were killed in action. The brick and marble monument is dedicated to the veterans of Lubbock and the South Plains area and an adjacent area honors living and deceased members of the U.S. Armed Forces. A final section is for citizens who wish to show their support of veterans and the memorial.
