Frequently Asked Questions

What are Industry Career Certificates?

Industry career certificates are online, in-demand, self-paced professional certificates through Coursera Career Academy from industry leaders like Google, HubSpot, IBM, and Meta. These certificates are optional, non-credit enhancements to your Texas Tech degree, providing job-ready skills for you to complement your majors, explore new career paths, and distinguish yourself in the job market.

Who can enroll in an Industry Career Certificate?

Industry career certificates are available to Texas Tech students with a TTU email address. Courses will be available to faculty and staff beginning Spring 2024 and are coming soon for TTU alumni—stay tuned.

First-year, first-semester students will receive invitations at the start of their second semester. Not recommended for students currently on academic probation.

Do Industry Career Certificates earn credit at TTU? Do they count toward my degree? Should I complete an Industry Career Certificate instead of enrolling at TTU for the summer terms?

No. These certificates are optional, non-credit enhancements to your degree plan to help you learn in-demand, job-ready skills. They are never a replacement for any credit-bearing degree or certificate program. If you are interested in credit-bearing programs, you can learn more by following the links below.

How is this different from signing up on coursera.org?

Texas Tech has partnered with Coursera to provide access to the Career Academy certificates to our students at no charge.

When you create an account on coursera.org, you are accessing the consumer site and will be asked to pay for the program. When you join the program specifically created for Texas Tech using the email invitation or the learning program URL, you can access the Career Academy certificates at no charge.

How many Industry Career Certificates can I earn?

You can complete as many certificates as you wish. Each program is rigorous, so select carefully and make a plan to invest the necessary time.

Can I complete the certificate at my own pace?

Yes. Industry Career Certificates offer on-demand learning. Most certificates in the program have personalized deadlines that begin when you enroll in a certificate. There is no penalty for a missed deadline, so you can work at your own pace. The deadlines you see are suggestions to help you stay on track, but if you miss a deadline, you will have the option to reset the deadlines.

What if I already have a Coursera account?

If you already have an account with your personal email, you can link it with your official account to maintain a single learning history. Detailed steps for linking: Coursera: Join a learning program.

Why am I not receiving any emails from Coursera?

You must verify your email address in order to receive the emails. You will receive an email to verify your account, please click the link in the email to complete the verification process. If you're not able to verify, then reach out to our learner support team at https://learner.coursera.help/hc.

What do I do if the Coursera platform is asking me for payments?

This means you are not viewing the certificate through your Texas Tech learning program. Make sure you access Coursera Career Academy through your Industry Career Certificates link shared by your organization and then navigate to your desired certificate.

If you are on the Coursera consumer site, you will be asked for payment. You can double check that by clicking on the toggle on the top left corner and you will see a dropdown with the list of all the programs you are a part of (“My Coursera” means Coursera consumer site).

If you do not see the dropdown toggle, that means you have not joined any learning programs.

How long will each certificate take?

These certificates are self-paced, and the time investment varies for each. Details are listed in the course information page. Generally, certificates take between 3-12 months to complete with 10 hours or less of flexible work per week.

How long will each non-credit course take?

These non-credit courses are self-paced, and the time investment varies for each course. Details are listed in the course information page. Generally, courses take between 1-6 weeks to complete.

Will I get a course certificate after completing a course?

Yes, you will receive a course certificate after completing all the items in the course. There are select courses that do not offer a certificate. It is generally indicated on the course description page where you enroll.

Do I need to pay for the course certificate?

No, as your learning program is sponsored by Texas Tech, you can get course certificates at no charge.

Why did I did not get my certificate when I completed the non-credit course?

This could happen because of the following reasons:

  1. Pending name verification (Go to your profile settings to verify your name)
  2. Pending ID verification (this is required for only a few courses and you would need to upload valid ID proof)

Please note that there are select courses that do not offer a certificate. It is generally indicated on the course description page where you enroll for the non-credit course.

Why don't I see a course or certificate in the Industry Career Certificates learning program?

Industry Career Certificates through Coursera Career Academy are a curated suite of in-demand certificates. Our partnership allows us to offer these certificates to our students at no charge to the student. If there is an Industry Career Certificate you believe should be in your learner program that you cannot access, or if you see a Coursera course or certificate you would like to see added to the learning program in the future, please reach out to online.careercertificates@ttu.edu.

What are the different types of assignments and what do I need to do to pass them?

Different certificates have different types of assignments such as quizzes, peer-reviewed assessments, and programming assignments.

What are peer reviewed assignments?

Peer reviewed assignments are graded by learners who are also taking the certificate at the same time. In order to receive a grade, you typically need reviews with a passing score from 3 peers on your assignment submission and also need to review the assignments of 3 peers in order to complete the assignment.

Please note that receiving peer reviews often takes time (up to 1-2 weeks or sometimes longer), as it depends on the number of available reviewers in the course as well as your submission being in circulation long enough. Please take this into account and allow enough time to meet any deadlines to complete courses.

Are my grades and progress being tracked?

Texas Tech administrators can view your grades and progress in your Industry Career certificate. Please reach out to online.careercertificates@ttu.edu for more information.
