Program Overview

The Advanced School Counseling Certificate is designed for professionals who have already earned a master's degree in counseling or a related field and are ready to take the next step toward becoming a licensed school counselor. Delivered 100% online with asynchronous coursework, the certificate complements your existing graduate training by providing the specialized knowledge, skills and supervised fieldwork experience required to pursue Texas school counselor certification.

Students who complete this certificate will focus on the academic, career, personal and social development of K-12 students — learning how to design and manage comprehensive school counseling programs, support child and adolescent development and serve as an effective advocate for all students. The curriculum is specifically structured to meet the requirements established by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), including a 165-hour face-to-face supervised practicum with a certified school counselor in a brick-and-mortar school setting.

This certificate is ideal for counselors holding degrees in counseling psychology, marriage and family therapy, addiction studies, social work or rehabilitation counseling who want to expand their practice into K-12 school settings. Please note that Texas school counselor certification consists of additional state requirements beyond completion of this certificate; students are encouraged to review current TEA guidelines before beginning the program.
