Program Overview
The Advanced School Counseling Certificate is designed for professionals who have already earned a masters degree in counseling and are seeking to become certified school counselors in Texas. This 12-hour graduate certificate is delivered 100% online through asynchronous coursework and provides the specialized preparation required for Texas School Counselor certification.
The curriculum develops the knowledge and skills necessary to support the academic, career, personal, and social development of K–12 students. Students learn to design, implement, and evaluate comprehensive school counseling programs; collaborate with educators, families, and community partners; advocate for equitable student outcomes; and provide developmentally appropriate counseling services within school settings.
The certificate includes the coursework and supervised practicum required by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for certification. Candidates complete a 160-hour supervised practicum in an approved Texas K–12 school setting under the supervision of a qualified school counselor and in accordance with Texas Tech Universitys Educator Preparation Program (EPP) requirements.
This certificate is intended for individuals who already hold a masters degree in counseling and wish to expand their professional practice into the K–12 educational setting without completing an additional masters degree.
Completion of the certificate satisfies the educational and practicum requirements for Texas School Counselor certification through Texas Tech Universitys approved Educator Preparation Program. Candidates must also meet all applicable Texas Education Agency certification requirements, including passing the required certification examination and any additional state requirements in effect at the time of application for certification.
