What is "Directory Information"?

FERPA defines "directory information" as information contained in the education records of a student that would not generally be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed. For more information, please see: http://www2.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/faq.html#q4

The following student information is considered Texas Tech University Directory Information:
  1. Student Name
  2. Permanent and Local Addresses
  3. Place of Birth
  4. Classification
  5. Major Field of Study
  6. Dates of Attendance
  7. Degrees, Awards, and Honors Received
  8. Specific Enrollment Status
    • Full-time, Part-time, Half-time
    • Undergraduate, Graduate, Law
  9. Participation in Officially Recognized Sports and Activities
  10. Previous Institution(s) Attended

Off Campus Companies/Organizations

All requests must first be reviewed and approved by the Registrar. No information will be released without prior approval.

On Campus Student Organizations

Student organizations must have the approval of a faculty advisor. All requests must first be reviewed and approved by the Registrar. 

How is information released to military recruiters?

The Solomon Amendment is a federal law that requires universities to release the following information to military recruiters without student consent:

  • Student name
  • Address
  • Telephone number
  • Age or year of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Level of education (freshman, sophomore, graduate, etc.)
  • Academic major(s)
  • Most recent educational institution attended

Students may opt out of releasing their information to military recruiters through the MyTech (Raiderlink) system.
