Joshua Reid earned his B.S. in Biology from Athens State University in 2014 and a M.S. in Biology from Alabama A&M University in 2016, specializing in Genetics and Molecular Biology. He then earned his Ph.D. in 2020 from Middle Tennessee State University in Mathematics and Science Education, specifically biology education. His doctoral research focused on graduate student professional learning and how they experienced tensions between their roles of researcher and teacher. From there, Dr. Reid joined the Tennessee STEM Education Center where he worked under the guidance of Dr. Gregory Rushton. During his time there, Dr. Reid studied STEM teacher leader development and honed his research skills such as social network analysis.
Dr. Reids research team consists of discipline-based education researchers committed to improving graduate and undergraduate education in the life sciences. Dr. Reid's lab focuses on several key areas biology including graduate education in biology, fostering instructional change in biology departments, and promoting equitable and inclusive biology education. We have several current projects aimed at improving biology education (and discipline-based education research) in these focal areas. We conduct research that is both theoretical and empirical as well as interdisciplinary - drawing from fields such as psychology, sociology, developmental psychology, and mathematics education. Our research methods include qualitative data analysis (phenomenology, case-study), quantitative data analysis, and social network analysis. Check out our research group webpage for more information about our projects: https://reidbioed.wixsite.com/reidlab.
