Energy and Sustainability

Considerable research in the Department of Chemical Engineering focuses on technological advances in the environmentally sustainable production of energy and issues surrounding the use of energy and water. Projects include process intensification, nuclear waste, e-waste and saline water treatment, solar energy utilization and energy storage systems, novel heterogeneous catalysts for energy applications, and materials for enhanced oil recovery. In addition, exploitation of biomass is being enhanced through fundamental studies of biofuels production and advanced membrane separations. Extensive efforts are also aimed at mitigating the environmental impacts and societal issues derived from the of the hydrocarbon-based energy supply chain.
