Energy and Sustainability

Increasing world population and elevating global living standards demand significant technological improvements in the environmentally sustainable production of energy. In our department, we are addressing these challenges in a variety of ways, including improving solar energy utilization and energy storage systems, development of novel heterogeneous catalysts for energy applications, and improving materials for enhanced oil recovery. In addition, exploitation of carbon-neutral biomass is being enhanced through fundamental studies of cellulose degradation for biofuels production and advanced membrane separations of biofuels. Extensive efforts are also aimed at mitigating the environmental impacts and societal issues derived from the hydrocarbon-based energy supply chain.
