REGENTS PROFESSOR IN HISPANIC AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION

Kenton Wilkinson (B.A., University of Colorado, M.A., University of California at Berkeley in Latin American Studies, Ph.D., University of Texas in Radio-TV-Film) is an international communication specialist who also studies U.S. Spanish-language media, ethnicity, and media technology. Wilkinson's master's thesis research on U.S. Spanish-language television underscored international connections and led him to the Ph.D. program in Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin. His doctoral dissertation examines the interplay of language, culture and trade in shaping a regional market for Spanish- and Portuguese-language television programs. Before joining the University of
Texas at San Antonio’s faculty, Wilkinson taught at the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico for two years.

Dr. Wilkinson is the co-editor of Mass Media and Free Trade NAFTA and the Cultural Industries (Univ. of Texas Press, 1996) and author or coauthor of six book chapters and nine articles published in journals such as Communication Quarterly and Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media. His current project is a book-length manuscript concerning language difference in cross-cultural electronic media. Dr. Wilkinson has worked as an independent consultant in the medical translation field, and will be joining a collaborative project to improve healthcare for Hispanics residing in West Texas.
