Honoring her achievements and contributions to the college community, Abigail Bennett will proudly serve as CoMC’s Fall 2025 Banner Bearer.

This fall, Abigail Bennett of San Diego, California, will lead Texas Tech University’s College of Media & Communication graduates across the stage as the official banner bearer, an honor reserved for students who demonstrate exceptional academic dedication, leadership and service to the college community. A Public Relations and Strategic Communication major with an Advertising minor, Bennett has made a lasting impact through her involvement in Zeta Tau Alpha and the Public Relations Student Society of America.

Bennett’s interest in public relations began with curiosity about the effect messages have on audiences. “I wanted to understand how people interpret information and how one can alter a message to ensure the message resonates with a certain audience,” she said. She loves the blend of creativity, strategy and analytical thinking the major offers, and she appreciates that it prepares her for a wide range of careers across multiple industries.

Interestingly, Bennett didn’t begin her college journey at CoMC. “When I first applied to Texas Tech, I was studying agricultural communications at Davis College,” she said. With a family background in cattle ranching and citrus farming, she was eager to explore ways to contribute to the family business. But after a year of agriculture-centered PR classes, she realized she wanted broader career options. “I still love agriculture and all the careers it offers but being a part of the College of Media & Communication has offered me so many broader career opportunities.”

Two courses stood out to Bennett the most. “PRSC 3341, Public Relations Graphics and Production with Professor Rasmussen, was definitely one of my favorites,” she said. “Learning Adobe Creative Suite and understanding the rules behind design prepared me for my summer internship, where I used those skills almost every day.” She also credits Professor Nelon’s PRSC 3312, Public Relations Writing course for strengthening her AP Style writing and helping her gain confidence through constructive feedback. “With her constructive criticism and insightful tips, I was able to pick up the writing style quickly.”

Looking ahead, Bennett will continue her education at Texas Tech by pursuing a master’s degree in mass communication. In five years, she sees herself working in public relations for a major sports franchise or joining a PR firm that allows her to explore a variety of industries.

Her journey to Texas Tech was unique in itself. “Being an out-of-state student, moving halfway across the country was daunting,” she said. “The students and faculty at Texas Tech are welcoming and kind. I am so blessed to go to a school with deep-rooted traditions and a loyal, committed fan base.”

As she prepares to represent the College of Media & Communication as the Fall 2025 banner bearer, Bennett reflects her experience with gratitude and pride. Her time at Texas Tech has shaped her academically, professionally and personally, and she is ready to carry that banner into her next chapter.
