Doctor of Philosophy in Exercise Physiology

Graduate Part Time Instructors

Most of the PhD students in kinesiology are employed as graduate part time instructors (GPTIs). GPTIs are paid for 20 hours of work each week. In the first year, this is divided into 10 hours of teaching and 10 hours of research under the supervision of your mentor. These 10 hours involve teaching two exercise physiology labs (KIN 3306 Applied Exercise Physiology or KIN 4306 Exercise Testing and Prescription) in the fall and spring semesters. In the summer semester, GPTIs develop course materials in preparation for becoming an instructor of record in the following fall and spring semesters.

In the second, third, and fourth years, GPTIs typically teach two undergraduate kinesiology courses in the fall and spring semester. The summer semester involves teaching undergraduate kinesiology courses, preparing to teach new courses, or a combination of both.

The stipend for GPTIs in the first year is $22,000. This stipend increases to $25,000 after advancing to candidacy. Benefits for GPTIs include tuition and fees for nine required semester credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and six required semester credit hours in the summer. This does not include the international student fee that must be paid by the student. These benefits amount to $10,000 in savings on tuition and fees.

Prospective PhD students should speak to their potential doctoral program mentor about applying to be a GPTI.
