Master of Science in Kinesiology
How to Apply
Applications for admission are accepted year-round, but students may only apply to start the program in the fall or spring semester. Admission decisions are made based on a holistic review of a students background, past academic performance, career aspirations, and letters of recommendation. Graduate faculty will make a decision concerning admission after the application is referred to the department from the Graduate School. All items required by the department, as listed below, should be uploaded to the Texas Tech University Graduate School Application Portal.
Students applying to the master's program in Kinesiology must choose from two concentrations. These concentration have unique required courses and comprehensive evaluations.
The Exercise Physiology concentration is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in allied health (e.g., cardiac rehabilitation) or research in exercise physiology. Topics include cardiopulmonary exercise physiology, clinical exercise testing and prescription, and skeletal muscle physiology.
The Human Performance concentration is designed to prepare students for careers specializing in maximizing health and physical performance. Topics within human performance include biomechanics, performance nutrition, muscular and neuromuscular performance, strength and conditioning.
Departmental Admission Requirements
- Personal Statement, which is a vital part of your application. Your one-to-two-page statement must address (i) your career aspirations, (ii) how a master's in Kinesiology will advance your career aspirations, and (iii) which concentration (Exercise Physiology or Human Performance) you are applying for and why. This latter part is important because students are accepted into a specific concentration and cannot swith without reapplying. Finally, your personal statement cannot be primarily created by generative artificial intelligence (AI). You must include one of the two following generative AI honor statements: I, [full name], affirm that I did not use any form of AI to generate any portion of my personal statement, or I, [full name], affirm that I primarily wrote my personal statement, and I did not use it to generate the entire document; however, I used AI to clarify and/or enhance my statement.
- Resume or curriculum vitae with evidence of academic achievements and relevant experiences.
- An undergraduate degeee in kinesiology or a related field from an accredited institution. Successful applicants typically have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.2 in their last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework.
- Two letters of reference from professional references. Reference letters from academic professors are preferred.
