Master of Science in Kinesiology
Graduate Teaching Assistantships
A student in the in-person M.S. in Kinesiology program can apply for a graduate teaching assistantship as soon as they are accepted into the program or at the start of their second year in the program. Students awarded a graduate teaching assistanship teach Personal Fitness and Wellness (PFW) courses, which are 1 semester credit hour (SCH) physical activity courses. Graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) are expected to work 20 hours per week teaching five PFW courses each semester. Most PFW courses meet twice a week for 50 minutes each class period. It is required that GTAs have full-time graduate student status, which means enrolling in at least nine SCHs.
Benefits
The assistantship consists of a stipend of $15,000 for nine months (fall and spring semesters) in addition to an exemption from out-of-state tuition, waivers for most but not all fees, health insurance allowance, and membership to the Student Recreation Center. These benefits amount to almost $7,000 in savings on tuition and fees. The stipend and benefits follow university guidelines and are subject to change.
Application
To apply, complete the Application for Graduate Teaching Assistantship and record a three to five-minute video of you teaching an activity in your strongest teaching area. Email your completed application and video to Donna Torres, Program Manager. The reveiw of applicants for the fall semester will begin on February 1.
Evaluation and Reappointment
Students awarded a graduate teaching assistantship will undergo a performance review each semester, which includes their student evaluations. Assitantships are renewable for up to a maximum of four long semesters (fall and spring semesters) contingent on satisfactory academic progress and satisfactory work performance.
Summer
There are limited PFW courses offered in the summer. As a result, there are limited opportunities for students with a graduate teaching assistanship to teach in the summer. If given the opportunity, summer teaching involves teaching two PFW courses for an additional stiped of $2,500. Summer GTAs must enroll in at least three SCHs in the summer.
