Remnant Trust Exhibit Change

Earlier this month, the Museum of Texas Tech University conducted it's periodical rotation of the The Remnant Trust Exhibition. The new set of rare books was curated around the theme of Religious Tolerance and includes John Foxe's Book of Martyrs (pictured below), published 1610.

According to The Remnant Trust, this text addresses "touching matters of the Church, wherein are comprehended and described the great Persecution and horrible Troubles that have been wrought and practiced by the Romishe Prelates, especially in the Realm of England and Scotland, from the year of our Lord a thousand to the time now present. Gathered and collected according to the true Copies and Wrytinges cericatorie as well of the Parties themselves that Suffered, as also out of the Bishop's Registers, which were the Doers thereof, by John Foxe.

The ecclesiastical history, containing the acts and monuments of things passed. The work, a compendium of super erogatory agony and terror, met with such popularity that its second edition of 1570 was ordered chained in all cathedral churches for the use of the congregation. "For a century at least it was practically required reading in every English-speaking puritan household. Probably no single book has caused so many neuroses as has this one."

The Religious Tolerance display will be on view through September 2016.
