Blue by Design: Elegance in Color

PART 1: February 11 – October 18, 2026

A quilt featured in the Blue by Design exhibit

Blue is the most popular color in ten countries across four continents, including the United States of America. Costume designers for theatre and film employ blue to convey innocence, as in the Virgin Mary Blue, and to dress characters that are honest and have integrity. Dark blue suits have been favored by businessmen to convey their trustworthiness. Blue continues to represent calmness, trust, loyalty, and stability. This exhibit draws from the extensive Clothing and Textile Collection at the Museum at Texas Tech University to showcase dresses, hats, purses, shoes and quilts made in this favored color. Because so many blue objects were available the exhibit is split into two parts the first opening February 11, 2026, and the second opening September 25, 2026 in the Clothing and Textiles Gallery of the Museum.
