There is No I in CactUS
September 3 – November 7, 2022
On July 18, 2022, a Texas Christian University football recruiting coordinator posted
on Twitter calling out Texas Tech University for "attempting to 'build their brand'
in a desert" followed by a cactus emoji 🌵. This dig at the University was in response
to the Lubbock Matador Club pledging $25,000 contracts for 100 Texas Tech football
players.
In typical Red Raider fashion, Twitter was set ablaze by Red Raider Nation responding
with their own lighthearted tweets, most of which including the cactus emoji or images
of cacti.
In anticipation of the November 5th football game against TCU, the cactus has become
a fixture within the Red Raider community with the creation of cactus T-shirts, hats,
stickers, logos, artworks etc. The Museum of Texas Tech University did not want to
miss the opportunity to participate in the friendly rivalry and support Texas Tech
athletics while also featuring artists from the 'desert'.
