Why Competitive Collegiate Dance Teams Operate by Maintaining Balance Between Athletic and Artistic Domains
American collegiate dance teams provide performances and team spirit for collegiate sporting events and compete in national and regional dance competitions. Unlike university dance programs, whose goals involve training dancers to enter the professional dance field as artists or educators, collegiate dance teams reshape the purpose of dance to also include dance as an athletic, competition-driven pursuit. Through interviews with dance team coaches and published data about U.S. collegiate teams and competition organizations, this study examines collegiate dance teams' negotiations of the boundaries between dance as an artistic endeavor and dance as a team sport.
