Developing Second Language Literacies through Digital Social Reading

Current scholarship in foreign language (FL) pedagogy offers extensive support for text-centered curricula in order to engage students with the way language and visual designs work to create cultural meanings, and to guide them in critically reflecting on choices inherent in all acts of communication that emerge from and index particular identities, ideologies, and cultural discourses. This project entails infusing beginning and intermediate language courses with authentic French and Francophone texts, and supporting students' textual interpretations through Digital Social Reading (DSR). In DSR, reading becomes a more clearly social activity, as annotations and margin conversations made in the digital reading platform become part of the textual framework of the community of readers whose dialogues scaffold their meaning-making processes.
