The Biography of William Golding by John Carey and The History of Pendennis: His Fortunes and Misfortunes, His Friends and His Greatest Enemy by William Makepiece Thackeray.
What are you writing/thinking about?
Ancient Greek combat sports and agonism, and their contemporary versions; the power of narratives of Nostalgia, especially in connection with experiences of loss, displacement, exile and the border zones of empires; and whether the slow death of Juvenalian satire in the contemporary Anglosphere is inevitable.
