Presenter Information

Impact Talks

Each participant will present for up to 3 minutes to groups of their peers with one-minute transitions. Presenters are allowed one slide, which will be submitted and approved beforehand. Impact Talk Sessions will be one hour, with 5-10 presenters in each session. Each session will conclude with Q&As and all presenters are required to stay until the end of their session. Presenters must review all of their peers in their session, in order to be considered for the finals and awards.

Presenter Expectations:

• Submit one slide to true@ttu.edu before October 3, 2022.
• Check your emails for Abstract reviews and acceptance processes.
• Bring a digital copy of slide (i.e., thumb drive).
• You must present individually. No co-presentations allowed.
• Multiple presenters from the same project or lab are allowed; however, each student must be accepted and present individually. 
• You should prepare the focus of your presentation on how YOU are specifically making an impact through your role on the project.
• Arrive 15 mins early to presentation room assignment.
• Before session begins meet your session moderator and make sure your slide is correct.
• When your slide appears on the screen it is your turn to present.
• When you are not presenting in the session you are required to review all your peers.
• If, for whatever reason you do not review, you will NOT be considered for the finals or awards.
• Presenters are invited to a luncheon on Saturday where the top 10 Impact Talks will be announced.
• If you are selected as a top 10 finalist, you will present your 3 min Impact Talk again to expert judges for potential awards.
• The Top three Impact Talks will be awarded to students who are positively impacting our community, state, and the world!
• You must participate in both session formats (prelims & finals) to be eligible for awards.

Slide Requirements:

Each presenter is required to submit one slide for display during their Impact Talk with the following requirements:

• Presenters are required to submit their slide to true@ttu.edu before October 3rd, 2022.
• The slide must display the presenters name.
• Please have no transitions on your slide, it should be static with all info displayed.
• Please make sure you do not have any audio/video embedded on your slide, as this will be compiled into a pdf when submitted.
• There are no other specific design requirements; however you are encouraged to prioritize readability and accessibility.
• Presenters, please note, you may not be able to see your slide except for turning your head and looking behind you.
• The slide must be submitted as a Adobe Acrobat PDF file (.pdf).
• Presenters are encouraged to bring a digital backup of their slide, in case of technical difficulties (i.e., thumb drive).

Abstract Guidelines

• All formatting and special characters (e.g., scientific symbols) will not be processed by the form. (Plain Text Only)
• Do not include author or title information in abstract.
• Abstract should be no longer than 300 words (2000 characters or less) (no minimum).
• Author's information will be entered on a separate part of the form (Do not include in abstract).
• All communication regarding abstract submission will be from true@ttu.edu. 

Additional Considerations:

• Abstracts should state, in clear terms, the central research question or creative theme and the purpose of the project.
• Abstracts should provide a brief discussion of the project (e.g., research methodology).
• Abstracts should state conclusions, either final or anticipated.
• Abstracts should be well organized.
• The abstract will appear in the program exactly as you submit it, so check your spelling, grammar, and punctuation carefully.
• Abstracts should be reviewed by your faculty mentor for editing and verification before submission.
• Faculty Mentor review/support will be confirmed through a validation process.
• Abstracts that DO NOT receive Faculty Mentor support will NOT be accepted.

PLEASE NOTE: ABSTRACTS ARE CONSIDERED FINAL UPON SUBMISSION. PROOFREAD YOUR ABSTRACT CAREFULLY.

Sample Abstract:

Abstract Title: Of Squirrels and Men: A Story of Platelet Storage

Name of Author(s): Bailee Sliker, Scott Cooper

Abstract: Platelets are routinely used in transfusions, yet they cannot be stored in a refrigerator or else they will be cleared rapidly when re-injected into a patient. The objective of this experiment is to see if platelets from ground squirrels are resistant to cold storage, and thus could serve as a model to develop methods to store human platelets in the cold. To test this we will fluorescently label platelets from humans and ground squirrels, store them at 4C and 37C for up to 48 hours, and measure their uptake by cultured human liver cells. Previous research has shown that human platelets stored at 4C are rapidly taken up and we predict that ground squirrel platelets stored at 4C will be resistant to this cold storage.

Evaluation Criteria & Rubric:

Presenters must fully participate in both session formats meaning prelims and finals to be eligible for an award. If a presenter moves on to the Top 10 Finalists they will give their same Impact Talk to a panel of faculty and staff judges. The Top 3 Impact Talks will be students who are positively impacting the community, state, and world!
