The focus of my group research activity is Wind Energy Outreach and Awareness in Lubbock, Texas, specifically for ages 6-17. My role involves creating social media posts and assisting the team with research. Our study compares engagement levels between social media posts and participation at in-person events. The goal is to determine which outreach method is most effective in engaging this age group.
I help manage and analyze social media engagement on Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook for the Techsan Wind Team, Texas Tech University's, and South Plains College's team for the Department of Energy's Collegiate Wind Competition. We track attendance at in-person events such as TechSavvy, SWE's Catch the Engineering Bug, and KidWind.
I hypothesize that in-person events will have higher engagement levels than social media, as younger audiences may not use platforms like LinkedIn or Facebook as frequently. While our posts receive engagement, it is often from older age groups, such as university students and professionals. Understanding how to effectively reach younger audiences will help organizations foster early interest in renewable energy and introduce more people to potential careers in the field.
