Lifeguard Certification

At this time, there are no lifeguard certification spots available, we are full.

University Recreation Aquatics is affiliated with the American Red Cross to offer lifeguard classes and certification upon successful completion of the class. Participants must be at least 15 years old to register and participate in the class.

This class prepares candidates to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to aquatic emergencies and prevent drowning and other incidents. After successful completion of the class, participants will receive the following certifications (valid for 2 years): Lifeguarding, First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for The Professional Rescuer, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

The first step you will need to complete is registering for Lifeguard Class Part 1 or a Lifeguard Review Class. In both you will need to first complete a pre-cousre evaluation. This evaluation consist of the following, 

  • Jump into the water fully submerging.
  • Resurface and swim 150 yards – using front crawl or breaststroke (goggles are allowed).
  • 2 minutes of treading water- you are not allowed to use your arms.
  • Swim 50 yards using front crawl or breastroke.  
  • Timed brick retrieval – you must swim 25 yards, surface dive and retrieve a 10 lb. brick, then swim 25 yards on your back with the brick on your chest; in under 1 minute & 40 seconds. 

After successful completion of Lifeguard Class Part 1 your instructor will lead you through the next steps to gain your certification. 

Classes are scheduled the following the way,

Part 1 Lifeguard Class: 

  • 7:00p-9:00p

Part 2 Lifeguard Class: 

  • Thursday: 5:00p-9:00p
  • Friday: 5:00p-9:00p
  • Saturday: 9:00a-5:00p
    • 1 hour break for lunch
  • Sunday: 9:00a-5:00p
    • 1 hour break for lunch

Lifeguard Review Class:

  • Saturday 9:00a-6:00p
    • 1 hour break for lunch

Make-Up / Refund Policy:

Make-ups are not offered if participant is not able to make the scheduled class or for inclement weather.  If inclement weather cancels a class, those affected will be contacted with more information.

Except as otherwise stated, refunds or credits will not be issued after payment has been made for an activity, class, or program.

Exceptions include:

  • If the activity, class, or program is canceled by Texas Tech University - University Recreation
  • If a participant is injured or unable to participate due to a documented medical reason.

Any refund request outside the stated exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Refunds are made at the discretion of the Assistant Director of Aquatics and are not guaranteed.

Lifeguard Certification Information

 

Lifeguard Class

Texas Tech Aquatics offers the American Red Cross Lifeguard class. These classses are blended learning, which means there will be approximately 7 hours of online coursework that must be comepleted before the first day of the in-person class sessions.  

The first step to earning a American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is to sign up for and successfully complete a lifeguard pre-course.The pre-course skills test is comprised of multiple skills tests. Please see the list below for details.

The cost of the Lifegaurd Class Part 1 is $30.00. The Lifeguard Class Part 2 will cost $195.00, which will be paid after the successful completion of Part 1.

Lifeguard Review Class

Lifeguard Recertification participants must provide proof of valid Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications and pass the pre-course. This class will consist of approximately 9 hours of lifeguarding review. The Lifeguard Review/ Re-certification Class will cost $175.00

Lifeguard Certifications will be issued:

  • After successful completion of the course, participants will receive the following certifications (valid for 2 years): Lifeguarding, First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for The Professional Rescuer, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
