How to use Job Composer

The Job Composer in Open OnDemand allows you to easily create, edit, and submit batch jobs to the HPCC directly from your web browser. You can use existing templates or scripts, adjust job settings like memory and CPU, and manage all your jobs without using command-line tools.

From the Jobs menu on the Open OnDemand dashboard,  Active Jobs to view and monitor all jobs currently running on the cluster or you can choose Job Composer to create and submit new jobs.

How to Access Job Composer Open OnDemand Portal

1. Navigate to HPCC OnDemand Portal

2. Enter your eRaider username and password to authenticate and log in to the Open OnDemand portal.

3. To open the Job Composer, you can do one of the following:
       From the  Jobs Menu , select  > Job Composer ,

Navigating the Job Composer

The Job Composer interface in Open OnDemand provides an organized view of your job scripts and submission options. From this screen, you can create, edit, and manage batch jobs that will run on the HPCC cluster.

1. Job List Panel 

      • Displays all your created job scripts in a list format.
      • Each job entry shows the Created date, Job Name, Cluster, and Status (e.g., Not Submitted, Queued, Running).
      • Click on a job name (such as Sample Slurm Job Script) to view or edit its details.

2. Toolbar Actions 

      • + New Job – Create a new job script using a template or from an existing job.
      • Edit Files – Opens the job’s script (e.g., slurm_submit.sh) in a built-in text editor for modification.
      • Job Options – Allows you to change job specific settings, such as job name, partition, or resource allocations.
      • Open Terminal – Opens a terminal window in the job’s working directory for command-line access.
      • Submit – Submits the selected job to the HPCC scheduler for execution.
      • Stop – Cancels a running or queued job.
      • Delete – Removes the selected job entry from the list.

3. Job Details Panel

      • Displays key information about the selected job, including:
      • Job Name – The name assigned to the job.
      • Submit to – The cluster where the job will be submitted (e.g., RedRaider Cluster).
      • Script Location – Path where the job script is stored.
      • Script Name – Name of the shell script used for submission (e.g., slurm_submit.sh).
      • Folder Contents – Lists all files in the job directory; click a filename to open it.

Submitting a Job

To submit a job using the Job Composer:

  1. Select a Job –  Click on the +New Job button to create a new job or select an existing one you want to submit to the cluster.
  2. Review Job Details – Verify that the job script and parameters (memory, CPU, partition, etc.) are correct.
  3. Edit or Update as Needed – Use Edit Files or Job Options to make any changes.
  4. Submit the Job – Click the Submit button.
  5. Monitor the Job Status – After submission, check the Active Jobs page under the Jobs menu to view progress or logs.
