Ashley Rougeaux-Burnes received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas. Her research focuses on the production of garments that marry science, technology, fiber arts and design, by investigating methods that nature (i.e., plant life, animals, etc.) has developed to overcome challenges and to adapt to the environment. Her research tests the influences that science and nature have on clothing aesthetics and how this positively affects the life of the wearer. Rougeaux-Burnes previously developed a successful collection of garments using this method: the silhouettes, textures, patterns, and colors of these garments were inspired by methods of protection utilized by insects. Characteristics included the interpretation of the chitinous exoskeleton and the compound eye in the design of flat patterns and the garment construction.

A major part of her research is the creation and development of innovative textiles and garments that mimic nature's approach to problem solving. Using qualitative analysis and design processes, Rougeaux-Burnes's study translates biomimicry, the process of design and production of materials, structures, and systems that are modeled on biological entities and processes, into original textiles and garments achieved through fabric manipulation, printing, dyeing, and surface design techniques.

Three of Rougeaux-Burnes's apparel designs based upon biomimicry were chosen by peer review to be exhibited at the 2014 International Textile and Apparel Association Annual Conference, where her garment entitled Elytra won the 2014 Lectra Outstanding Graduate Student Award for Best Use of Technology.
