HRM assistant professor, Bonhak Koo, Ph.D., helped create new certificate to give HRM students better opportunities for success in the hotel industry

Texas Tech's Hospitality and Retail Management (HRM) program recently developed the Hotel Analytics and Management Certificate for undergraduate students. Bonhak Koo, Ph.D., assistant professor, helped create this certificate for students wanting to specialize their hospitality degree. The courses are designed to build core knowledge, skills, and abilities in the hotel industry.

koo“The Hotel Analytics and Management Certificate is a beneficial addition to students' resumes, supplementing their experiential learning with high-level strategic thinking and analytical skills needed for today's competitive job market,” Koo said. “This certificate option allows students to specialize in hotel analytics and management, encompassing contents from the front office, sales and marketing, revenue management, and other managerial aspects of the hotel business.”

Koo has spent over a decade working in and researching the hotel industry. He has collected knowledge and practical skills to pass along to the next generation of industry workers. Through his experience with the Ritz-Carlton organization, he has developed effective methods for motivating and educating future hospitality workers.

“Because the hotel industry is dynamic and rapidly changing, it requires employees and leaders to be critical thinkers and creative problem solvers,” Koo said. “Therefore, I want students to learn both hard and soft skills, making sure that they acquire job-related knowledge and abilities that the industry requires, at the same time, establish their own philosophy of why and how they realize hospitality in the workplace.”

Adding the Hotel Analytics and Management certificate to degree plans will allow students to build marketing and leadership skills from various courses. Koo prepares students for real-world applications by using hands-on projects and providing accurate hotel simulations. Hospitality and Retail Management students who complete the certificate will be highly prepared to enter a successful career in management.
