Teaching Artist Training

Teaching Artist Training Graphic

Our goals are to expand voices at the Museum and to take the Museum into the community to build relationships around art’s relevance to things that are important to participants and partners. We hope to share the power of art to touch our lives with wonder, understanding, and personal discovery.

About the Program

The Museum at Texas Tech (MaTT) seeks practicing visual artists in the Lubbock and surrounding community who want to expand creative practice into the field of teaching artistry, as defined by Lincoln Center Education.

This intensive, multi-day training is designed for visual artists who want to learn how to connect people with art through guided experiences, community engagement, and creative learning.

Whether you dream of teaching in museums, running workshops in schools, working with special populations, or integrating art into community programs, this training will give you the tools to confidently design and lead meaningful and measurable arts experiences.

At the conclusion of the program, visual artists who complete the training may apply for paid, part-time contract work as Teaching Artists with the MaTT.

Who Should Apply

This program is open exclusively to visual artists, including but not limited to:

  • Painters
  • Printmakers
  • Sculptors
  • Illustrators
  • Photographers
  • Ceramicists
  • Artists working in fiber or mixed media

You do not need prior teaching experience to participate—just a willingness to learn, experiment, and grow in a supportive environment.

What You’ll Gain

  • Professional development
  • A deep understanding of Teaching Artistry
  • Practical tools for leading engaging art experiences for diverse learners
  • Skills in lesson design, facilitation, and gallery-based teaching

  • Seek to grow professionally—whether inside or outside museum settings-and value teamwork, critique and self-reflection.
