SMART Goals for Maintaining Productive Writing Practices

Breaking down writing goals into small, attainable goals can help writers feel more productive, motivated, and positive about their writing progress. In this workshop, we will talk about how to create specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals that will alleviate the pressure of writing and support better mental health.

Half-Day Paraphrasing Studio

Hosted by Becky Bruning, GWC Lead Consultant and Writing Centers of Texas Tech Social Media Coordinator 

Grad students and postdocs are invited to join the Graduate Writing Center for a highly interactive morning of paraphrasing practice. Attendees will explore the key elements of effective paraphrases and practice several strategies that can help writers express ideas in an integrated, academic way.

Participants are encouraged to bring pdfs or printouts of 1-2 peer-reviewed articles they plan to read for coursework or research in the upcoming semester. 

Please note, this is a 3-hour event. Space is limited to the first 40 registrants. Breakfast will be provided.

Purposeful reading is fundamental to effective academic writing. This interactive workshop integrates strategic reading techniques with academic writing through hands-on practice with annotation, source synthesis, and other techniques. We will engage with evidence-based strategies to enhance critical reading for writing and develop higher-order thinking skills that improve academic work across disciplines

Contextualizing and Communicating Research Findings

Interpreting results is a vital aspect of all academic writing, regardless of the discipline. This workshop covers how best to convey important information—statistics, observations, patterns, and conclusions—in the context of a paper and the literature that surrounds it, so that readers can understand why certain findings are important, and what implications they have for the field moving forward.
