FERPA for Parents and Families
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. At Texas Tech University, students control access to their education records, including information shared with parents and family members.
Learn how to request access to your student's records, connect through the Red Raider Family Network and understand FERPA privacy protections.

Red Raider Family Network
Texas Tech students can authorize access to their education records through the Red Raider Family Network. This platform provides electronic FERPA authorization for requesting access to a student's academic and financial information.
Parents and family members can submit an access request, and the student determines which records to share. The network also provides Texas Tech news, university updates and information for families.

Requesting Access and Managing Connections
Use the instructions below to create an account, request access to your student's records and manage your connections.
The Red Raider Family Network enables you to connect with your student by sending a request to access their records. Once the request is approved, you will gain access to view their information starting the day after approval. The data is updated nightly.

A parent can initiate a request for access to their student's information through the Red Raider Family Network.
FERPA authorization grants access to information. It does not grant the right to act on the student's behalf.
The FERPA authorization remains valid until rescinded by the student.

- Log in to the Red Raider Family Network.
- Click the graduation cap icon in the top-right corner.
- Click Go to My Connections.
- Click Forgot PIN? Click to reset.
Common Questions
Although parents do not have a right to these records, the university is permitted to share them with a parent if the student authorizes that access. Texas Tech University uses the Red Raider Family Network to provide and manage that access.
FERPA identifies certain information, called directory information, that may be disclosed without the student's permission if the student has not restricted its release.
- Student name
- Permanent and local addresses
- Place of birth
- Classification
- Major field of study
- Dates of attendance
- Degrees, awards and honors received
- Specific enrollment status:
- Full-time, part-time or half-time

Students who are enrolled in both high school and courses at a postsecondary institution present a unique situation. While FERPA rights belong to parents with respect to high school records, they belong to the student with respect to postsecondary records.
Students can establish a connection through the Red Raider Family Network to provide access to their education records. Dual credit students are advised of their FERPA rights in the dual credit admission program information.
Texas Tech University strongly encourages parents of dual credit students to respect the student's ownership of their education records at the college level and seek ways to obtain information while safeguarding the student's rights and responsibilities.
Faculty teaching dual credit courses will make every attempt to communicate with and through the student as an important step in the student's development.
Parents of dual credit students are encouraged to communicate first with the student and then, if authorization is in place, with the instructor. Other record access options may exist in extenuating circumstances and would require contacting the Office of the Registrar directly.
