Notetakers
For Student Notetakers
Thank you for volunteering to take notes this semester. You will be provided with a carbonless notepaper pad that will enable you to simply take your own notes, while an automatic double copy is made. Alternately, you may choose to type your notes on your laptop or tablet which can then be emailed to the instructor to forward to the student. Student Disability Services will also make copies of your notes from your own notepad; just bring them to 130 Weeks Hall.
Student Disability Services would like to recognize your efforts by providing you with a letter of commendation which could be considered for volunteer service hours and enhance your résumé. Prior to the end of the semester, please return the note-taking form that can also be found on the front of the carbonless notepaper pad available at SDS in 130 Weeks Hall.
Suggestions
In addition to regular class assignments and expectations, note any scheduled class cancellations, videos, and tours for the semester.
Make sure your handwriting is legible. If you're not sure about a particular spelling, notate this in your notes next to the word and add a question mark. Identify what abbreviations mean.
Make sure the notes are complete, correct, and clear.
While it is important to include charts and diagrams, if there is a chart in the book, you can reference that in the notes. There is no reason to duplicate something that is already there.
Resources
Online Notetaker Training Module
"Online Notetaker Training is a self-guided training that defines the role of the notetaker, delivers information about hearing loss, and provides note-taking strategies that enable student notetakers to provide accurate, comprehensive classroom notes for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. The training can be completed in multiple sessions or all at once. When students are confident they have learned the material, an online quiz evaluates their note-taking knowledge. A passing score will earn a 'Verification of Training Completion,' which the student can print" (Described and Captioned Media Program).
