Ali Hooks

Hi! I'm Ali Hooks, a TSI Math Instructor, where I help students tackle college algebra without losing their minds (or their calculators). I earned both my bachelor's and master's degrees right here at Texas Tech—once a Red Raider, always a Red Raider!

As a first-generation college graduate, I know firsthand how overwhelming those early steps into higher education can be. That’s why I’m passionate about meeting students where they are, building their confidence, and helping them believe they can do hard things—especially when math is involved. I believe in progress over perfection and in creating a learning environment that’s supportive, encouraging, and maybe even a little fun. When I’m not diving into equations or celebrating student wins, you can probably find me quoting The Office, binge-watching Bob’s Burgers, or pretending I don’t secretly love spreadsheets.

My Favorite quote

I live my life by the words “Plvs Vltra”—“Further Beyond.” I first saw this motto at Columbus’s tomb in Seville, Spain when i studied abroad with TTU, where it stands as a final echo of his journey: a defiance of boundaries and a declaration of ambition. It wasn’t just a voyage across the Atlantic—it was a leap into the unknown. That same spirit guides me every day. Whether I’m facing new challenges, pursuing growth, or supporting others on their path, I’m always looking beyond the horizon for what’s next.

Favorite Movie

I’ve loved Lilo & Stitch for as long as I can remember—it’s the perfect mix of chaos, heart, and humor. Maybe that’s why I ended up with a French bulldog who looks (and sometimes acts) just like Stitch. He’s small, stubborn, and full of personality… basically my own little blue alien.

Fun Fact

I speak three languages—English, French, and American Sign Language—and I’m currently working on Spanish. Basically, I’m always looking for new ways to connect with people (and eavesdrop in four languages).
