Co-Ed Cheer Tryouts

The Texas Tech Co-Ed Cheer Squad is comprised of talented male and female cheerleaders.

The Co-Ed Cheer Squad perform at all football games, women's home volleyball games, and men's and women's home basketball games. In addition, the Co-Ed Cheerleaders will the have opportunity to travel to post season football bowl games, Big 12 tournament basketball games, and NCAA/NIT basketball tournament games. The squad also represents Texas Tech at many university and community events throughout the year. Co-Ed Cheer Squad will also have opportunity to represent Texas Tech at NCA College Nationals.

Tryouts are closed to the public.

Saturday, May 3 - Sunday, May 4

Female participants must choose which squad to tryout for - Co-Ed or All-Girl. Tryouts happen at the same time. At end of tryouts, Coach has right to change and award position on opposite squad if needed and sees a better fit.

What's the difference between squads? All-Girl is consisted of all-female cheerleaders stunting in female groups. Co-Ed consists of male and female cheerleaders with the males stunting with the female flyers.

Cheerleaders will NOT be able to participate in Fall Sorority or Fraternity Recruitment/Rush activities.

 

Tryout Requirements

  • Completed Tryout Application by May 1.
  • Freshman/Transfer Students - Accepted to TTU for 2014-2015 academic year
  • Current TTU students:
    • Enrolled full time (Undergraduate: 12 hours, Graduate: 9 hours)
    • Cumulative & Current GPA of 2.0 or above
  • Current Health Insurance (a copy of insurance card must be sent in with application)
  • Pay Tryout Application Fee ($50 - nonrefundable)

A Tryout Material Video Link will be posted on social media outlets on Friday, April 25 at 4:00 pm CST. This material includes gameday/spirit section Fight Song routine and sideline chants. Material will be expected to be learned prior to tryout date.

Tryout Application :: Deadline Thursday, May 1

The tryout application is an online form. Please click link below to complete application. Your Acceptance Letter or Transcript and copy of health insurance card can be uploaded within form. If unable to upload, you can mail documents prior to tryouts or bring with you. A completed application will be required before you're able to participate in tryouts.

Note, the Optional Open Gym Practice does NOT affect Tryout Score. This is time for you to come to gym and work on skills. No material will be taught.

Female Participants trying out for Co-Ed may get invitations to attend All-Girl Tryout Call-Back. Invitations will be given at tryouts by Coach. Not guaranteed.

Video tryouts will not be accepted this year. Please contact Coach Bills if you have questions.

 

 

Tryout Format & Skill Sections

Preliminary Tryouts :: Saturday, May 3 (morning)

  • Standing Tumbling
    • Back Tuck (or standing full)
    • Jumps to Tumbling: max of 3 jumps to back handspring back tuck level or better
  • Gameday Spirit & Motion Technique
    • *NEW* A tryout material video link will be posted on social media on Friday, April 25. Material must be learned prior to tryouts. Facebook | Twitter
    • Looking for sharp motions and ability to lead the crowd.
  • Running Tumbling
    • One Running Passes (must be back handspring back tuck level or better)

 

Semi-Final Tryouts :: Saturday, May 3 (afternoon)

  • Stunts - (partners must be with someone trying out - no outside stunt partners are allowed; females MUST tryout as flyer position)
    • Two Stunts
      • One-Arm Stunt (toss entry preferred, hands-pump-and-go required)
        Awesome or One-Arm Lib
      • Toss Entry into Stretch with Double Down dismount
        (Extended toss, Ball-Up, Full-Up)
    • Stunt Partners can be formed at College Prep Clinics or night before tryout open gym.
  • Personal Interview & Skill Call-Backs
    • Personal interview with Coaching Staff & Panel Judges
      Could ask to see additional skills (stunts, tumbling, elite collegiate basket)

 

Final Tryouts :: Sunday, May 4 (mid-day/afternoon)

  • Finalists Only. Cuts will be made throughout Preliminary & Semi-Final Rounds.
  • You will be grouped according to skill level selected on tryout application.
  • Elite Tumblers (speciality is elite collegiate tumbling, as chosen on tryout application)
    • Tumbling Passes
      • Two different Elite Level Standing Tumbling Passes at your level
        Recommended skills, but not limited to, to showcase: standing fulls, one back handspring-full, two back handsprings-full, one back handspring/whip/full, jumps to elite tumbling combinations
      • Two different Elite Level Running Tumbling Passes at your level
        Recommended Skills, but not limited to, to showcase: punch front, arabians, full to additional elite skills, kick fulls, whip-series, full-full
  • Elite Stunters (speciality is elite collegiate stunts, as chosen on tryout application)
    • Two Elite Stunts
      • One or Two Partners will be selected by Coach (partners will be from finalists)
      • Elite Entries into Extended Stunts
        Includes, but not limited to, back/front handspring ups, hand-hand, rewinds, cartwheel ups.
      • Females must show front and back flexibility in stunts with double down dismounts.
  • All-Around (speciality includes both elite tumbling and elite stunts, as chosen on tryout application)
    • Tumbling
      • One Elite Level Standing Tumbling Pass at your level
        Recommended skills, but not limited to, to showcase: standing fulls, one back handspring-full, two back handsprings-full, one back handspring/whip/full, jumps to elite tumbling combinations
      • One Elite Level Running Tumbling Pass at your level

Tryout Notes:

CoEd Tryout Participants will be expected to be available for the following time periods:

  • Saturday, May 3:
    • 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (preliminary & semi-final tryouts; includes lunch break)
  • Sunday, May 4:
    • 11:30 am - 3:00 pm (final tryouts; eat before or bring snacks) and
    • Approximately 3:00-4:00 pm (new team meeting)

Traveling Planning Tip -
Do not schedule flights out before 5:00 pm.
(given you make through full tryout process)

Cuts will be made throughout tryout process, both days.

Final selection of squad members will be posted after scores are tallied at end of tryouts.
