Co-Ed Cheer Tryouts

The Texas Tech Co-Ed Cheer Squad is comprised of talented male and female cheerleaders.

The Co-Ed Cheer Squad perform at all football games, women's home volleyball games, and men's and women's home basketball games. In addition, the Co-Ed Cheerleaders will the have opportunity to travel to post season football bowl games, Big 12 tournament basketball games, and NCAA/NIT basketball tournament games. The squad also represents Texas Tech at many university and community events throughout the year. Co-Ed Cheer Squad will also have the opportunity to represent Texas Tech at NCA College Nationals.

2020-2021 Co-Ed Cheer Tryouts

May 15-17, 2020

May 15: Tryout Practice, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
May 16: Preliminary & Semi-Final Tryouts, 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM
May 17: Final Tryouts & New Team Meeting, 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Cheer Program Benefits

Female participants must choose which squad to tryout for: Co-Ed or All-Girl. Tryouts happen at the same time. At end of tryouts, Coach has the right to change and award position on opposite squad if needed and sees a better fit.

What's the difference between squads? All-Girl is consisted of all-female cheerleaders stunting in female groups. Co-Ed consists of male and female cheerleaders with the males stunting with the female flyers.

Cheerleaders will NOT be able to participate in Fall Sorority or Fraternity Recruitment/Rush activities.

Can't make live tryouts? Video tryouts are NOT encouraged and will be given limited permission. Submit video tryout request by April 1.

2020-2021 Tryout Requirements 

  • First-Year & Transfer Students
    Must be accepted to TTU for 2020-2021 academic year
  • Current TTU students:
    • Enrolled full time (Undergraduate: 12 hours, Graduate: 9 hours)
    • Cumulative & Current GPA of 2.0 or above
  • Current Health Insurance (a copy of insurance card must be presented at tryouts)
  • Pay Tryout Application Fee ($60 Non-refundable; pay at check in at Tryout Clinic or Preliminary Tryouts)
  • Completed Tryout Application

Tryout Format & Skill Sections

Preliminary Tryouts

  • Standing Tumbling
    • Back Tuck Required by All Participants
      • Standing full not required, but recommended to show, if you have.
    • Additional Standing Tumbling
      Includes, but not limited to, back-handspring to back tuck/full, two back-handsprings to back tuck/full, back-handspring(s)-whip-full, back-handspring(s)-full-full.
    • Jumps to Tumbling: 
      • Toe Touch - Back Tuck/Full
      • Three Jumps to Tumbling (variety of jumps into your choice of tumbling.)
  • Gameday Spirit & Motion Technique
    • Fight Song & Sideline Chant
      (taught by video link emailed one week prior to tryouts)
    • Looking for sharp motions and ability to lead the crowd.
  • Running Tumbling
    • Two Running Passes
      (must be back handspring back tuck level or better)

Semi-Final Tryouts

  • Semi-finalists only. Cuts may be made throughout Preliminary rounds.
  • Stunts - (partners must be with someone trying out - no outside stunt partners are allowed; females MUST tryout as flyer position)
    • Two Toss Entry Stunts with Stunt Partner of your choice:
      • Toss Lib with pop-off (straight pop-off, full down/cork screw)
      • Optional Toss-Entry into Stretch with Double Down (Extended toss, Ball-Up, Full-Up)
    • Stunt Partners can be formed at open gym the night before tryout.
    • Coach may assign stunt partners for additional skill evaluations. 
  • Personal Interview & Skill Call-Backs
    • Personal interview with Coaching Staff & Panel Judges
      Could ask to see additional skills (stunts, tumbling)

Final Tryouts 

  • Finalists Only. Cuts will be made throughout Preliminary & Semi-FinalRounds.
  • Standing and Running Tumbling:
    • Two different Standing Tumbling Passes at your level.
      Recommended skills, but not limited to, to showcase: standing fulls, toe-full, one back handspring-full, two back handsprings-full, one back handspring/whip/full, back handspring(s)-full-full, jumps to elite tumbling combinations
    • Two different Running Tumbling Passes at your level.
      Recommended Skills, but not limited to, to showcase: punch front, arabians, full to additional elite skills, kick fulls, whip-series, full-full
  • Stunts:
    • One or Two Partners may be selected by Coach (partners will be from finalists)
    • Two Stunts connected showing different entries into Extended Stunts
      Includes, but not limited to, back/front handspring ups, hand-hand, rewinds, cartwheel ups, full ups.
    • Females must show front and back flexibility in stunts with at least one double down dismount.

Cuts will be made throughout tryout process.

Final selection of squad members will be posted after scores are tallied at end of tryouts.

Recommendation on flights leaving tryouts: do not book prior to Sunday at 5:00 PM. Those making new squad will have team meeting at approximately 3:00 PM or following tryouts. Tryout times subject to change.
