With the receipt of a $25 million grant from the United States Department of Education,
Lubbock became home to one of only eight federally funded Promise Neighborhoods in
the US in 2013 and the only one with a university serving as the primary partner in
program implementation.
One of the tenets of the Promise Neighborhood programming nationwide is that schools
can and should serve as centers for community revitalization. With programs as diverse
as expanded health clinic hours to nutrition and cooking classes, local library read-a-louds
to parenting programs for teens, the East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood is a place
of growth and change. Implementation of project based learning and educational models
that have proven effective in other communities with similar challenges, ensure that
area schools are able to provide a firm foundation to their students, their families
and all members of the community.
