OVERVIEW
We have several department-level endowments that benefit our undergraduate and graduate student's academic success. Our goal is to continue to expand our department-level endowments to support more students and help facilitate large-scale projects. Please see the current list of our endowment scholarships below.
Endowment: $25,000 can start an endowment in your name that will last for years to come. If you are interested in such an opportunity, please contact our Chair Jenn Burns directly at jenn.burns@ttu.edu.
UDERGRADUATE ENDOWMENTS
Bill & Meribeth Stevens Scholarship Endowment – awarded to sophomores through seniors majoring in biological sciences who are Texas residents and have a GPA above 3.25.
Deb. & M. Rushing Biology Scholarship Endowment – awarded to major in the department of biological sciences (current sophomores through seniors) based on academic merit.
Dr. Allen & Brenda Van Horn Scholarship Endowment – awarded to majors in the department of biological sciences based on academic merit. Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and have successfully completed at least 15 hours of course credit at TTU.
Earl D. Camp Scholarship Endowment - is the most prestigious honor bestowed upon graduating seniors by the faculty and staff of Biological Sciences at TTU. The award is named in honor of the late Earl Camp, former professor, and chairman of Biology, who endowed the award. The award carries a monetary prize, and the amount varies from year to year. Awardees are biological science majors who typically have cumulative GPAs of 3.7, or above. They have also participated in undergraduate biological research and have presented or published this research or are preparing to do so. Nominations are made in one of three ways: (1) a letter of recommendation from a biology faculty member, (2) a letter of recommendation from a research mentor, or (3) self-nomination by the student. Nomination materials are due no later than March 1st (for seniors graduating this coming May, August, or December). The nomination materials must include a letter of recommendation written by a biology faculty member or research mentor (up to three letters may be submitted), evidence of presentation/publication if applicable, and a resume.
F. Mayfield & R. Ayers Memorial Scholarship Endowment – awarded to majors in the department of biological sciences (freshmen through seniors) who have a GPA between 2.0 and 3.5 and are working toward a career in teaching.
J. Harvey Harris Ph.D. Scholarship Endowment - This scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student majoring in microbiology (undergraduate or master's level) or biology (doctoral level with specialization in microbiology). Selection should be based on excellence in academic performance and leadership.
John M. Burns Biological Sciences Scholarship Endowment - awarded to incoming freshmen through senior majors in biological sciences who are first-generation college students with a GPA of at least 3.0 and financial need. Submission of a FAFSA is required for consideration.
M.F. & V. Landwer Biological Science Scholarship Endowment - awarded based on merit and financial need to declared majors in the department of biological sciences (current freshmen through seniors) who have taken BIOL 1403 (students with the equivalent of this course elsewhere also qualify). Submission of a FAFSA is required for consideration.
GRADUATE ENDOWMENTS
Brandon A. Gross Research Endowment – This endowment will support research initiatives at Texas Tech University within the department of Biological Sciences with a preference for those conducting animal research, specifically, reptiles and mammals.
Charles Werth Memorial Biological Scholarship - This scholarship is intended to provide support for graduate students whose teaching/research interests are concentrated in Botany, at the Department of Biological Sciences.
E.L. Reed Herbarium Legacy Endowment Scholarship - This scholarship is intended to provide support for graduate students whose research utilizes or contributes specimens to the E.L. Reed Herbarium of the Department of Biological Sciences.
J. Harvey Harris Graduate Scholarship in Microbiology - This scholarship is intended to provide support for graduate students with excellent academic performance and strong leadership potential and who are engaged in Microbiology research in the Department of Biological Sciences.
J. Knox Jones Jr Memorial Scholarship Endowment - To be awarded to graduate students in the Department of Biological Sciences who aspire to be organismal-level mammalogist whose research interests include mammalian systematics and natural history in their broadest connotation. The awards, preferably made to doctoral-level students, is renewable annually for up to a total of four years for a Ph.D. student and up to a total of two years for a master's student, assuming normal progress toward completion of degree requirements, as judged by the appropriate departmental standing committee. Recipients must be citizens of one of the countries of the Americas, preferably the United States, and must have an outstanding previous academic record. The recipients may be employed up to halftime as a research or teaching assistant at the time he or she holds the scholarship and may hold concurrent scholarships and awards from outside the University.
Knapp Memorial Graduate Research Award - The fellowship is to be awarded annually to graduate student(s) in the Department of Biological Sciences studying mammalogy. The recipient(s) shall be selected by the Department of Biological Sciences graduate student affairs committee, in cooperation with faculty teaching mammalogy.
LaDuke Research Endowment Fellowship - This fellowship is to support graduate students in the Biological Sciences who are doing botanical research. Preference will be give to students contributing to vascular plant research, or conducting research using herbarium resources. If there are no graduate students doing botanical research or using the herbarium and/or greenhouse, the scholarship may be awarded to graduate students within the Department of Biological Sciences. Recipients should be in high academic standing, as determined by the scholarship committee, and can either be a part-time or full-time student. The fellowship is a yearly award. Preference is for a first-generation student.
Rene Fonseca Memorial Scholarship Endowment - For graduate students studying Natural History or Museum Science. Students must be a citizen of a South American Country.
Robert Packard Memorial Biology Scholarship Endowment - Graduate student in Biology. Selected by the Biology Department Scholarship Committee based on academic standards.
Van Horn Doctoral Research Endowment - To be awarded annually to a Ph.D. graduate student(s). The recipient(s) shall be selected by the Department of Biological Sciences graduate student affairs committee. Students receiving this award shall be allowed to use the funds to support his/her research travel, to purchase analyses of research materials generated from their dissertation research, and /or to purchase books and expendable materials and supplies for laboratory or field-based research use.
