WHAT IS BIOLOGY?
Biology, as its etymological roots indicate, is the study of life. As such, it a field that is as diverse as it is exciting. The Department of Biological Science's diverse faculty carry out world-class research in a wide array of fields: ecology and evolutionary biology, systematics and quantitative biology, molecular and cellular biology, genetics and genomics, physiological ecology of plants and animals, and microbial biology and biotechnology, to name just a few.
Biomedical research is an important strength, and many of the faculty participate in human and ecosystem health related research activities. The Department of Biological Science supports the One Health initiative that the health of people is tied to our surrounding ecosystems.
What do we do?
Over 30 different undergraduate and graduate level biology courses are offered each semester to support our degrees and core requirements for non-majors. Currently, there are over 1,500 undergraduate biology majors. The Department of Biological Sciences encourages undergraduate students to work with professors in research laboratories and projects to obtain first-hand information about research in the life sciences. These research programs have been well received in the past and have proved beneficial to both students and faculty. Students who have been involved in the research projects have received competitive grants; presented papers at scientific meetings; authored papers published in scientific journals; and progressed to become successful medical doctors, college professors, etc.
