Scholarships in Pulsed Power Science & Technology

Los Alamos National Laboratory sponsored Scholarship

Overview

The PPST program is designed to improve achievement and expedite student progress through the rigorous curriculum in electrical and computer engineering. Recipients will become part of a mentoring program that will provide direction and support as well as guided project work in the laboratory. Students will see and experience clear pathways to graduate school and employment in the fields related to pulsed power engineering and research. Technical activities in pulsed power include high power pulsed accelerators, pulsed power applications, pulse forming networks, high power switching, pulsed electrical insulation and breakdown, electromagnetic energy storage, explosive pulsed power techniques, high current electron and ion diodes, intense particle beams and the associated diagnostics. There is a critical need for highly trained engineers and scientists in pulsed power. Pulsed power applies science to help detect, repel, defeat, or mitigate threats to national security.

Scholarship candidates will be chosen based on a multi-faceted review system that will include: scholastic achievement, interest in pulsed power and high voltage devices, and recommendations. Finalists will be interviewed by electrical and computer engineering faculty. Awardees are expected to provide written, brief bi-monthly reports on the status of their academic and project efforts. Recipients will be expected to take pulsed power related electives, apply for national security related internships, and remain in good standing throughout the award.

Application Process

  • Student submits application to Andreas.Neuber@ttu.edu. Applications require a current resume (1-2 pages in PDF format) and will be accepted until slots are filled.
  • Applicants will be selected based on the applications and references,
  • Finalists will be interviewed by the PPST directors.
  • Program and scholarships begin in the Summer 2017 semester and will end Fall 2019.

Awardees

The scholarships will be highly competitive and provide generous support. Therefore, the performance of the awardees is expected to be commensurate. Recipients of the scholarships will be required to make good progress through their academic program. Although a scholarship is typically awarded for 2 semesters, the recipient will be evaluated after the first semester. Poor performance will result in the second-semester award being rescinded. Awardees will provide brief bi-monthly reports on status of their academic and project efforts. Faculty and student mentors will help awardees select appropriate coursework (ECE and other electives), projects, and internships. Students will select Project Laboratory IV and V topics that focus on pulsed power.
