Advisors & Headquarters

Chapter advisors and inter/national headquarters partners play an important role in supporting fraternity and sorority members, student leaders and organizations at Texas Tech.

Fraternity & Sorority Life works closely with advisors and headquarters staff to support chapter operations, communicate university expectations, develop student leaders, address concerns and strengthen the fraternity and sorority experience.

Chapter Advisors

Volunteer alumni and faculty or staff advisors provide mentorship, continuity and perspective to fraternity and sorority chapters. Advisors help student leaders understand organizational expectations, navigate challenges and make decisions that support the long-term health of their organization.

Organizations may maintain an advisory board or council with several volunteers. At minimum, recognized student organizations are expected to maintain a faculty or staff advisor as required by the university.

Chapter leaders should keep advisor information current and include advisors in important conversations about chapter operations, membership, events and concerns.

The Advisor Role

Advisors are not expected to manage a chapter on behalf of its student leaders. Their role is to provide guidance, ask questions, share perspective and help students make informed decisions.

Mentor Student Leaders

Help officers develop leadership skills, establish priorities, work through challenges and maintain continuity as leadership changes.

Understand Expectations

Stay familiar with university, council and inter/national organization expectations and help student leaders identify requirements that apply to chapter activities.

Stay Connected

Maintain regular communication with chapter leadership, other advisors, Fraternity & Sorority Life and the inter/national organization.

Support Planning

Encourage officers to plan ahead for membership activities, events, leadership transitions, finances and other chapter responsibilities.

Promote Accountability

Help members address concerns early, encourage responsible decision-making and support chapter leaders when difficult conversations are necessary.

Connect Students With Resources

Recognize when a student or organization may need additional assistance and help connect members with FSL or other university resources.

Working With Student Leaders

Strong advising relationships are built on regular communication rather than contact only when a problem occurs. Advisors should establish expectations with chapter officers early in their terms and determine how frequently they will communicate.

Headquarters Partners

Inter/national organizations provide important oversight, resources and organizational expertise to their chapters at Texas Tech. Fraternity & Sorority Life considers headquarters staff essential partners in supporting students and maintaining healthy organizations.

FSL works with inter/national partners on matters that may include:

Chapter operations and organizational development

Membership recruitment and intake
New member education
Risk management and prevention
Chapter accountability
Student and member concerns
Expansion and organizational growth
Campus and community trends affecting fraternity and sorority life

Headquarters staff visiting Texas Tech are encouraged to connect with FSL. Our staff can provide campus context, discuss chapter progress or concerns and help coordinate communication with appropriate university partners.

Communication & Partnership

Effective partnerships depend on timely communication among students, advisors, headquarters staff and the university. Fraternity & Sorority Life communicates with advisors and inter/national partners about significant chapter matters and encourages partners to share concerns with our office early.

Keep Contact Information Current

Chapters should make sure FSL has current contact information for chapter officers, advisors and appropriate inter/national organization representatives. Accurate information allows the university to communicate important requirements, deadlines and concerns to the right people.

Visiting Campus

Consultants, headquarters staff and other organizational representatives visiting a Texas Tech chapter are encouraged to contact FSL before or during their visit. Our staff is available to discuss the chapter, university resources and issues affecting the broader fraternity and sorority community.

When You Have a Concern

Advisors and headquarters staff do not need to wait until a concern becomes a formal conduct matter before contacting FSL. Early communication can help identify resources, clarify university expectations and determine appropriate next steps.

Chapter Accountability

When concerns involving a fraternity or sorority arise, FSL may work with chapter leadership, advisors, inter/national headquarters and appropriate university offices to understand the situation and determine next steps.

Issues involving individual member behavior may be addressed differently from concerns involving chapter operations, organization-sponsored activities or a pattern of behavior within an organization.

When a concern indicates potential organization involvement, FSL may communicate directly with advisors and the inter/national organization as part of the university's response.

Encourage Early Communication

Advisors and headquarters partners can help organizations address concerns by encouraging student leaders to communicate early, involve appropriate partners and take responsibility when problems occur.

Self-reporting or early communication does not determine the outcome of a university process, but it can help the university and organization respond to concerns more effectively.

Starting a New Chapter

Fraternity & Sorority Life works with the four governing councils and inter/national organizations to evaluate opportunities for responsible growth of the fraternity and sorority community.

An inter/national organization interested in establishing or reestablishing a chapter at Texas Tech should contact FSL before beginning outreach or recruitment efforts on campus.

Expansion considerations may include:

Interest and readiness within the appropriate governing council
Student interest
Community growth and membership trends
Availability of local alumni and advisor support
Inter/national organization resources and support
Timing and capacity for a successful expansion process

Expansion opportunities and timelines vary by council. FSL staff can provide information about the current community and discuss the appropriate process with interested organizations.
