National Pan-Hellenic Council

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the coordinating council for historically African American fraternities and sororities represented at Texas Tech University.

Nationally, NPHC includes nine organizations commonly known as the Divine Nine. Texas Tech's NPHC brings member organizations together to support academic excellence, leadership, service and cooperation across the fraternity and sorority community.

About NPHC

The National Pan-Hellenic Council was established to foster cooperation among its member fraternities and sororities. NPHC organizations have distinct histories, traditions and membership processes while sharing long-standing commitments to scholarship, leadership, service and community involvement.

At Texas Tech, the council provides opportunities for chapters to collaborate on programs, service initiatives and activities that strengthen both their organizations and the broader university community.

NPHC Organizations

Texas Tech currently has four active NPHC chapters. An additional Divine Nine organization is expected to return to campus during Fall 2026.

Returning Fall 2026

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is identified by Texas Tech NPHC as returning to the university during Fall 2026. Students interested in the organization should contact Fraternity & Sorority Life for current information about its status and membership opportunities.

Organization Recognition

Students should verify that an organization is recognized by Texas Tech before participating in membership activities. An organization may be part of the Divine Nine nationally without currently maintaining a recognized chapter at Texas Tech.

Fraternity & Sorority Life can confirm the current recognition status of any organization.

How to Join

NPHC organizations bring in new members through a process commonly known as Membership Intake. Each organization determines when it will conduct intake and establishes its own eligibility requirements and membership process according to its national policies.

There is not one council-wide recruitment period in which all NPHC organizations accept new members at the same time.

Preparing for Membership

1. Focus on Academics

Maintain a strong academic record. Students should have at least a 2.5 GPA when exploring NPHC membership, though individual organizations may require a higher minimum.

2. Get Involved

Build your college experience through campus involvement, leadership, employment, service and other meaningful activities.

3. Learn About the Organizations

Attend chapter and council programs and take time to understand each organization's history, values and expectations.

4. Build Genuine Connections

Get to know current members through chapter events and other campus activities rather than approaching membership as only an application process.

5. Serve Your Community

Community service is an important part of the NPHC experience and some organizations may consider service experience during the membership process.

6. Plan Financially

Membership includes financial obligations. Students should understand anticipated costs and prepare before pursuing membership.

Eligibility

Each NPHC organization establishes its own membership requirements. Requirements may include:

Enrollment as an undergraduate student at Texas Tech
A minimum cumulative GPA
Completion of a required number of college credit hours
Community service or leadership experience
Financial obligations associated with membership
Additional requirements established by the national organization

Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee membership.

Membership Intake

Membership Intake is the process through which NPHC organizations select, educate and initiate new members. Chapters conduct intake only when authorized by their national organization and in accordance with university expectations.

Because each organization manages its own process, schedules and requirements can differ significantly from chapter to chapter.

If You Are Interested in an Organization

Attend programs hosted by the chapter and NPHC
Learn about the organization's history, values and service priorities
Communicate with current members of the recognized Texas Tech chapter
Watch for official informational or interest meetings
Follow instructions provided directly by the chapter and national organization
Ask FSL if you are unsure whether a membership activity is authorized

Students should rely on information from the recognized chapter, its national organization and Fraternity & Sorority Life when navigating Membership Intake.

Hazing Is Not Part of Membership

Hazing is prohibited at Texas Tech. Students should never be required to participate in harmful, degrading, intimidating or unsafe activities to become or remain a member of an organization.

Programs & Events

NPHC and its chapters host programs throughout the year that are open to the Texas Tech community. These events are one of the best ways for prospective members to learn about NPHC and meet current members.

Meet the Greeks

Meet the Greeks is held near the beginning of the semester and introduces the Texas Tech community to NPHC organizations, their histories and their traditions.

Students can meet chapter members, learn about individual organizations and experience traditions such as stepping and strolling. Students considering NPHC membership are strongly encouraged to attend.
