Interested in joining a fraternity or sorority at Texas Tech? Start by finding the council and membership process that fit your interests.
Texas Tech Fraternity & Sorority Life includes four governing councils. Each council and organization has its own recruitment or membership process, eligibility requirements and timeline.

There is no single process for joining a fraternity or sorority at Texas Tech. The best first step is to learn about the four councils and the organizations within each community.
1. Explore the Councils
Learn how IFC, CPH, NPHC and MGC differ and explore the organizations within each council.
2. Learn About Organizations
Attend programs and recruitment events, talk with current members and learn about each organization's values and expectations.
3. Understand the Process
Recruitment and intake look different across councils. Review the process for the council you are considering before participating.
4. Make an Informed Decision
Consider academics, costs, time commitments, leadership opportunities, safety and the overall membership experience before joining.
Choose a Council
Interfraternity Council
IFC
IFC governs many of Texas Tech's men's fraternities. Students can explore membership through informal recruitment and a structured Formal Recruitment process.
College Panhellenic Council
CPH
CPH governs Texas Tech's National Panhellenic Conference sororities. Most students join through fall Primary Recruitment, with Continuous Open Bidding available through some chapters when space allows.
National Pan-Hellenic Council
NPHC
NPHC organizations bring in new members through organization-specific Membership Intake. Each chapter follows its own national requirements and timeline.
Multicultural Greek Council
MGC
MGC organizations generally manage their own recruitment or Membership Intake processes. Prospective members also complete MGC 101.
How Membership Works
The terminology and structure vary by council, but each process gives students an opportunity to learn about an organization before becoming a member.
IFC Recruitment
IFC uses informal and formal recruitment. Students can meet fraternity members, attend recruitment events and explore multiple organizations before deciding whether to accept membership.
CPH Primary Recruitment
Primary Recruitment is a coordinated process involving all 12 Panhellenic sororities. It gives prospective members an opportunity to meet each organization through a structured mutual selection process.
CPH Continuous Open Bidding
Continuous Open Bidding, or COB, is an informal process available when individual Panhellenic chapters have membership space. Not every chapter participates each semester.
NPHC Membership Intake
Each NPHC organization determines when it will conduct Membership Intake and follows its national organization's eligibility and membership requirements.
MGC Recruitment & Intake
MGC organizations manage their own recruitment or intake processes. Students should attend chapter programs, get to know current members and complete MGC 101 before joining.

Before You Join
Fraternity or sorority membership can be a meaningful part of your Texas Tech experience, but it also comes with responsibilities. Take time to understand what membership will require before making a commitment.
Academic Expectations
Organizations may establish minimum GPA or enrollment requirements for prospective and current members. Academic requirements vary by council and organization.
Financial Commitment
Membership generally includes dues and other expenses. Costs can vary significantly among organizations and may be higher during the first semester of membership.
Ask for a clear explanation of expected costs, payment schedules and any additional expenses before accepting membership.
Time Commitment
Members may participate in chapter meetings, new member education, service, philanthropy, leadership programs, academic activities and social events. Ask what is required and what is optional.
Housing
Some organizations have chapter facilities or housing expectations. Ask whether living in a chapter facility is required, optional or unavailable and how housing costs are structured.
Safety & Hazing Prevention
Hazing is prohibited at Texas Tech. Membership should never require harmful, degrading, intimidating or unsafe behavior.
Questions to Ask Before Joining
Recruitment and intake are opportunities for you to evaluate an organization just as much as an organization may be evaluating you.
- What values guide the organization?
- What does membership look like on a typical week?
- What are the academic expectations?
- What are the total costs of membership?
- Are there housing requirements?
- What is expected during new member education or Membership Intake?
- What leadership opportunities are available?
- How does the organization support academic success?
- What community service or philanthropy does the chapter participate in?
- How does the chapter approach member safety and risk management?
- How involved are chapter advisors and alumni?
- What opportunities continue after graduation?
Take Your Time
You should feel comfortable asking questions and exploring your options. Students should not be pressured to make a membership decision before they are ready or discouraged from learning about other recognized organizations.
