Senior Family and Consumer Sciences  (FCS) major Haley Marcus is completing her student teaching experience with hopes of teaching in the Dallas-Fort Worth area after graduation. To prepare her for her teaching certification, Haley is student teaching grades 11 and 12 at Plano East Senior High School.

"I wanted to have a career that prepares students for life outside of high school," Haley said. "I wanted to be a teacher that taught students things that I wish I would have learned while I was in high school."

One thing Haley says she loves about learning to teach family and consumer sciences is how each day in the classroom is different. She explains that FCS classrooms are designed to provide a hands-on learning experience in areas of home economics.

"It gives our students the chance to explore their learning in different ways. When a student walks into your class ready and eager to work that day, it makes all the difference in the classroom."

Haley describes her student teaching experience as one that taught her more than she thought possible. From learning classroom management skills to building relationships with students, Haley says she is thankful for the ability to know how to adapt to challenges in the classroom.

"It has taught me how to be flexible and that it is okay to change things throughout the day because it works differently in one class," Haley said. "These are all skills that I could not have learned without student teaching, and I cannot wait to use them in my own classroom."

Haley is most looking forward completing her FCS teaching degree from Texas Tech because it offers subject areas that she has seen her students greet with excitement.

"Teachers have the chance to be a support system for their students, that they might not have anywhere else. Being the teacher that students come to with their problems makes me feel as if I am making a difference in their life."
