Hannah Shirley

Graduate Teaching Assistant
Hospitality and Retail Management

Graduate student Hannah Shirley currently serves the College of Human Sciences as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) while she is completing her master's degree in Hospitality and Retail Management. Hannah is guided in her role as GTA by HRM Associate Professor Charlie Adams, Ph.D.

Hannah received her bachelor's degree in Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management (RHIM) before choosing to continue her education in the Hospitality and Retail Management master's program.

"I felt like I could get more out of my college experience if I had a little of both programs under my belt," Hannah said. "The master's program has proven to be one of the best decisions I have ever made."

Hannah says she was able to gain industry experience from course activities in the graduate program, with the activities being unique to Texas Tech University. Hannah remembers one in particular, having gained real-world experience in her field. Hannah's retail buying course allowed students to consult for Academy Sports and Outdoors and they presented their final project to Academy's corporate management.

"The class sizes are smaller, you know everyone, and the coursework is challenging. I love it."

In her experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, Hannah has taken a large leadership role in the classroom by assisting with the administering of undergraduate student exams, grading assignments, and even being a key player in reaching out to industry recruiters for the program.

"My favorite aspect of the position is getting to interact with students on a different level than when I was an undergraduate," Hannah said. "I feel like more like a mentor and it is rewarding."

Before her master's graduation this fall, Hannah is considering the pursuit of her Ph.D. after graduation to teach college courses as a professor. Hannah is also contemplating using her retail background in a corporate office working with category management.

We are proud to have students like Hannah, who are working to support our mission of improving and enhancing the human condition. In Hannah's case, she is working to improve the retail and hospitality experience of customers around the globe.

Congratulations on your success and continued education, Hannah!
