Investment Advisory Services
Personal Financial Planning

Last summer, senior Personal Financial Planning (PFP) major Mason Clark gained valuable work experience at his internship at Investment Advisory Services in The Woodlands, Texas.

Mason's internship gave him real-world exposure to the financial planning process. He was granted the opportunity to sit in on client meetings and witness advisor-client dialogue first hand.

"It was intriguing because it opened an entirely new side of planning that I didn't have any acquaintance with. I learned the importance of soft skills and possessing the ability to communicate effectively."

Mason's time at Investment Advisory Services gave him insights on how a financial advising firm runs.

"Every firm is completely different, so it was great to establish early on what type of culture and business model I was seeking."

His experience also made him familiar with software used to make the advisor-client relationship more efficient.

"As the industry progresses and these sorts of applications become more prevalent, I will be able to draw on this knowledge base in the future."

After graduation, Mason plans on working for a fee-only Registered Investment Advisory (RIA) and pursuing his Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) certification.

Reflecting on his internship and education, Mason says he has come to understand the significance of peer financial planning. He believes those who pursue this career can truly change people's lives.

"As Professor Deena Katz likes to say, we could all be described as closet social workers. The gratification that comes from assisting clients with their needs, guiding them through troubled times, and aiding them in building a better future is invaluable."

Originally an accounting major, Mason is glad to have found the PFP program. For him it's the perfect combination of interpersonal and analytical skills.

"The Personal Financial Planning program is unique in the ample opportunities it provides. You are learning from faculty that has had a profound impact on the industry. Also, there are numerous student organizations that allow you to get involved and leave your mark on the program."

Mason has certainty left his own mark on the program. As a Personal Financial Planning Student Ambassador, he hosted a panel of student interns who were able to share their experiences. Students were encouraged to start thinking about their future and learn from their peers.

"We all bond through adversity, and I can truly say I've made friendships that will last a lifetime. The PFP Program is truly one of a kind, and I am honored to be a part of it."
