Research Focus

My general research interests are in mental health promotion, developmental psychology, and research methodology. I conduct interdisciplinary and collaborative research on a wide variety of topics, that mostly centre around three interrelated overarching themes:

  1. Examining risk and protection factors for psychopathology

I examine the interplay of environmental and individual factors as well as the mechanisms that link them to future psychopathology. I use a developmental perspective, examining factors from the prenatal period to adulthood. My research has examined a wide range of mental health problems, with more focus on substance use, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideations and attempts. Recent projects also integrate well-being rather than only focusing on psychopathology. My previous and current projects have examined many individual and environmental factors related to psychopathology, such as temperament/personality, parenting, romantic relationships, peer relationships, puberty, obesity, ethnicity/race, gender, sleep, and sexual orientation.

  1. Inform the development of effective targeted prevention and intervention programs

My observational research on psychopathology allows the identification of malleable risk and protection factors. As a collaborator with research teams in clinical psychology, I aim to apply findings from my observational research to early prevention and intervention programs.

  1. Contributing to the accessibility and use of state-of-the-art research methods

My research in quantitative psychology aims to identify key gaps in statistical training and the literature to inform educational methodological articles that are in a language accessible to applied researchers. My main expertise is in structural equation modeling (SEM) and longitudinal analyses. Recent projects also focus on gender-inclusive methods in perinatal research. My interests in research methods also include scientific communication, with ongoing projects on gendered language in research and on knowledge translation.

  • Person-environment interactions; Resilience
  • Family environments
  • Temperament/Personality
  • Gender inclusivity in perinatal health
