Stephanie Shine

Faculty member in Human Development and Family Sciences receives award for her work with young children

Stephanie Shine is the Executive Director for the Center for Early Head Start. She is also an Associate Professor of Practice in the Human Development and Family Sciences department. She has dedicated her life to serving the children of her community in more ways than one. By educating the future educators of the world, she is passing on her experience and advice to the new generation.

The Champions for Children Award honors someone who has made it their mission to impact the lives of children under the age of six through service, advocacy, funding, or education in Lubbock, Texas. Shine is a proud recipient of this honor.

“It is very validating that our work at Texas Tech, in East Lubbock and abroad are recognized and valued in our community,” Shine said. “When awareness is spread, all sorts of connections and opportunities open up!”

Shine's work at Texas Tech has helped the Human Development and Family Sciences department grow in new ways.

“The early childhood major is an innovative way to prepare students to become certified teachers: they learn about child development and family dynamics, as well as taking the infant and child lab classes in our Centers,” Shine said. “They get a great grounding in children and families before going to the College of Education to learn about teaching children in the classroom.”

Shine's work within the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences is helping to create educators of the future that are well-versed in what young children need from their teachers.

“The best programs for young children are not designed to coach them in school readiness but are primarily about providing the time and place for children to explore and play and discover and learn to their fullest,” Shine said.

Shine's dedication to shaping young minds and preparing future educators is what makes her stand out against others. Her passion for the future generation is inspiring.

“I love how John Dewy said it, ‘Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself,'” Shine said.  “Though for many children, the best guidance they will ever get about getting along with others is at age four in preschool!”
