What is your major?

Human Development & Family Sciences, Minors in Health Professions and Biology

What is your hometown?

I grew up in Dalton, Georgia. My family and I moved to Lubbock, Texas, about two and a half years ago.

Why did you choose your major?

Before I started my journey as a college student, I knew I wanted to serve individuals by improving their health and supporting their overall well-being. Additionally, I am interested in developmental milestones during childhood. Part of this interest stems from being the oldest sister in my family and from my enjoyment of working with children. I chose to study Human Development & Family Sciences because the program equips students with the knowledge and tools to make a positive impact on individuals’ and families’ well-being. For instance, my major has given me an understanding of human growth through a lifespan perspective and how individual or communal factors may affect individuals’ experiences within developmental domains.

What does being selected as the Banner Bearer for the College of Health & Human Sciences feel like?

It is a great honor to be selected as the Banner Bearer for the college, which has significantly impacted my personal and professional development over the past few years. I feel abundantly grateful for this wonderful opportunity, and it will remain a fond memory of mine. It is truly an honor to be confided in as the representative for the College of Health & Human Sciences student body.

How will the skills and knowledge you gained in your degree program prepare you for your future?

My degree program has prepared me to become a professional who improves the health conditions of individuals. I feel well-prepared to consider the experiences and backgrounds of individuals I work with when developing plans that enhance their physical and psychosocial well-being. My future goal is to become an occupational therapist. I believe my Human Development & Family Sciences major has provided me with a strong understanding of methods for improving the lives of individuals; I will use this understanding in my future interactions with patients as I support them in developing or recovering skills meaningful to them.

What do you most enjoy or appreciate about the College of Health & Human Sciences?

I truly appreciate the opportunities and support students are given by the College of Health & Human Sciences. One opportunity students can experience is research involvement. I am grateful for my experience as a research assistant in the Child Development Lab. Additionally, the community of the College of Health & Human Sciences provides an understanding and supporting network to students. Professors want the best for their students as they encourage engagement in coursework to build students’ knowledge and skills. The college has provided me with positive experiences and connections that I will continually value.

What are your career plans/next steps?

I am excited to start the Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in May 2025.
